Writing Projects
During writing workshop (daily 3 - read, write, or do word work) the students have been working on:

Book review  The students learned in early September that they would be writing their first book review at the end of October.  Since the first days of school, the students have had daily reading time after the lunch hour (before French), and were also encouraged to read their novels when completed any other work. Students were given a template, and worked together through how to outline and organize a book review (using a class read aloud book that was familiar to all students).  These reviews will be due at the “end of the month” on Fri., Nov.1.

Creative writing. Yikes!  It doesn’t seem Possible!  Beginning in September, Grade 7s learned about writing a good “hook”, and use of descriptive language that engages the senses of the reader.  They will have a chance to demonstrate their learning in their first fiction story.  They have been working on their stories during reading and writing workshop time.

Grade 8s have also been working on their first fiction work of the year, and will be assessed on ideas, organization, word choice, grammar and usage (sometimes called “conventions”), sentence fluency, and voice.  Due date: also Nov. 1.

Students will be given a time this week to conference with Mrs. Butterfield to go over questions, and to refine their work through the editing process.
